As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of ACA in 2010 and the
150th anniversary of the organized camp experience in 2011, we
honor the indispensable role that camp has played in the lives
of children, youth, and adults in America. ACA knows today — as
we have known from the beginning — that camp is critical
to the education of the whole child — providing opportunities
to learn powerful life lessons in community, character-building,
skill development, and healthy living. Camp, and the positive
experiences of camp, shape and define us — even as successful
adults. Camp has changed many lives, introduced people to new
skills and competencies, and broadened horizons and abilities
to contribute to a global community.
Preserving the rich history
of the camp experience is essential for the future. To honor
the past, ACA has launched a Web-based
tribute with a photo gallery,
videos, an interactive timeline, and more.
"Camp is a tradition — one
that is ever present, adding value to future generations of healthy,
productive American citizens. This Web tribute is one that celebrates
the history of the camp tradition and inspires our tomorrows," said
Peg Smith, CEO of ACA.
We invite you to share your camp memories
on our Camp
Story Board — short stories or historical anecdotes
up to 500 words can be submitted to History@ACAcamps.org. This
growing archive of personal experiences demonstrates the diversity
of the camp experience. Or, post how camp has made a difference
in your life on our Because
of Camp…™ Facebook
Page.
Camp is an American tradition — an equal opportunity life
changer. For the past 150 years, it has provided education, experience,
and memories for generations of children. Join ACA's celebration,
and be a part of the next 150 years of camp.
